If you’re looking for replacement windows for your Bend, OR home, vinyl might be the way to go. Though vinyl windows used to be thought of as poor quality or cheaply made, they’re actually great choices for almost any home. Modern construction advancements and craftsmanship have elevated vinyl windows to be some of the best not only price, but also in visual appeal, energy efficiency and more.

While there are plenty of inexpensive and well-made vinyl windows on the market, there are certain characteristics you should look for while shopping for vinyl windows to make sure you’re getting the best for your home. There are four main characteristics to keep an eye out for:

  1. Color—Vinyl windows are made from polyvinyl chloride, or PVC. PVC can be made with a variety of chemical fillers, pigments and plasticizers that can decrease the window’s strength and durability. Lower quality vinyl windows sometimes have a bluish tint because of the fillers and additives, while higher quality vinyl windows are truer to their given color.
  2. Frame Construction – Vinyl windows come in a wide range of frame constructions, but some are better than others in terms of both energy efficiency and durability. Look for vinyl windows with frames that have multiple chambers to help prevent deformation due to extreme temperatures. Also keep an eye out for welded frames, as the welding process creates a smooth, airtight seal to ensure a weatherproof window.
  3. R Values—R-values determine a window’s energy efficiency based on standards set by the American Society of Heating, Refrigeration and Air Conditioning Engineers, or ASHRAE. R-values go from 0.9 to 3.0, with higher numbers meaning better energy efficiency. R-values take into account glass quality, insulation properties and heat transference, so keep an eye out for high R-values when shopping for vinyl windows. While the other characteristics are important, R-values are crucial for a window’s energy efficiency.
  4. Style—Vinyl windows are available ready-made in a range of shapes and sizes to match almost any home design. You can also order custom-made vinyl windows if you need a specific window shape or have a special preference. Be sure to order the right style to go with your home’s look. For example, a casement window might not look great on the front of a Victorian style home but would match well with a more modern aesthetic.

Consider color, frame construction, R-values and style when shopping for vinyl replacement windows to make sure you not only get the best window for your money, but also find the ideal match for your personal style and home’s appearance.
