Ways to Avoid Winter Roof Damage

As winter weather arrives, your roof has an important job: to keep you and your family protected and comfortable. Is your roof ready to handle whatever Mother Nature throws its way during the cold season? Here are some ways to keep your roof in good shape this winter!

Clean Your Roof

The Pacific Northwest is no stranger to wind and rain. When those winter storms roll in, tree branches, twigs, dirt, leaves, and other debris can gather on your roof’s surface. If that debris stays piled up, it could cause mold to grow, and may even invite pests to the area. So, be sure that roof debris is regularly cleaned off and cleared to minimize any potential issues.

Keep Nearby Landscaping Trimmed

If you have tall trees or other landscaping that hangs over your roof, be sure to keep everything trimmed. Having things fall on your roof can cause holes, punctured areas, or other damage that could be costly to repair or replace.

Check Gutters

Wet weather will be here for a while and with that, water will roll off your roof and route into the gutter system. If your gutters are full of outside debris or if they’re broken, they’re unable to do their job. This translates to standing water on your roof, which will create a host of problems over time, such as mildew, mold, or even dry rot formation.

Repair or Replace Your Roof

If there is considerable damage to your roof, don’t ignore it. Significant roof troubles can turn into a big headache that also negatively impacts the inside of your home –especially if your roof is already old and needs replacement. Did you know the average home roof will last about two decades? If your roof is that old – or older – it’s time to plan a replacement. We use Malarkey Roofing Products® for our roof replacements, which offers an array of durable Energy Star-rated roofing materials.

Our factory-trained installers have served the greater Portland OR area since 1998 and replace roofs all year long, even in the winter! A new roof is an important investment in the life and longevity of your home, so call us today to get your free roof estimate!

Commonly Asked Questions About Window Installation

Is 2022 the year for your home windows to be replaced? You probably have some questions about what the process looks like.  What you need to do to prepare your space for the renovation? What’s the process like? Here are some commonly asked questions and our answers to help guide you.

How long does it take?
This depends on how many windows are being installed. It also depends what type of products are being installed. If you have a custom window, it may take more time to remove or install. This could impact the overall time frame of the project. When our installation technician comes out to do the final measure of your home’s windows, we provide  an estimate on how long it will take, and also give you a timeline on when the products will arrive.

What if I live in an old house?
Older houses have some different things to take into consideration. For example, homes that were built in decades past often have lead paint or window trim that has this type of paint around it. We are a lead-safe company and if your house has lead paint anywhere, we take all precautions to keep you, your family, and our team safe. For each installed window, we tarp it off, so dust and dust particles don’t spread as easily. We also ask that those that are more vulnerable, such as children, pets, or elderly citizens are kept away from the installation area until it is complete and cleaned.

Do all the windows come out at once?
No, we work on one window at a time. Working on one window at a time allows us greater focus, and not to mention, it will keep your home’s interior temperature more comfortable. Also, you can be confident that we won’t ever leave an open space at the end of the day.

Do I have to be there during installation?
That’s up to you. We are okay with either scenario. We often do installation customers while they are away at work or while they are out catching up on errands. No matter what, we treat your home with the utmost care and attention to detail. You can trust that we will respect your space and take good care of it while we’re there.

With more than two decades installing windows for residential or commercial customers, you can be confident that we know what we’re doing. We will help you get your windows installed accurately and on budget. Getting new windows installed by a team of professionals at Lifetime Windows and Doors is one of the best decisions you can make for your home this year. Why Professional Window Installation?

Every home is unique. So, when it comes to replacing your windows, you need experts that understand the various inner-workings of different homes and their window openings. Window installation is more than popping a new window into an existing space in the wall. It’s about expertly measuring and fitting the new windows into your home, so they are each air-tight and reliable for years to come. Here are some reasons for professional window installation.

#1: Quick and efficient process.
Have you ever try to tackle a home maintenance project that initially seemed like a piece of cake, but it ended up taking a long time? This can be a frustrating situation. Professional window installation by our team of experts at Lifetime Windows and Doors ensures a turn-key process that is done quickly and efficiently. #2: Tools.
Professional window installers have the right tools needed to install your windows the right way, the first time. Our tools are specifically designed to get your new windows in easily. Many times, homeowners think they have the right materials and tools to do a DIY window replacement. But, then they end up realizing that they don’t have the proper equipment to do the job the correct way. This often sends them to the store to buy expensive tools, or they end up using equipment that isn’t cut out for the job. This could lead to mistakes, damage to your home, or improper installation.

#3: The right installation.
There should be no gaps between the window/frame, and the existing wall. With a professional window installation, you’ll have peace of mind that the job is done right. Drafts and cold spots will be eliminated in your home if the windows are installed correctly. Whether it’s an egress window, a picture window for your living room, a tempered glass window for your bathroom, or a garden window in your kitchen, we know each part of the installation process, so everything is tight and secure upon completion.

2022 Home Trends to Watch For

When it comes to home design, there are a lot of different trends that come and go. In 2022, there are a few trends to keep your eye out for. If you are renovating your home this year, it’s important to know what is the most popular, and what to steer away from. Here are some things to keep in mind.

#1: Higher quality material and details are important.
People nowadays appreciate quality. The better-quality products you have, the longer they will last – especially when it comes to your home. So, if you are planning a home renovation, consider what products will not only look beautiful, but last longer. At Lifetime Windows and Doors, we pride ourselves in installing top-quality windows, doors, and roofing products for our clients. With products from Milgard, Simonton, Therma-Tru, and many more, we understand that quality craftsmanship goes a long way. Products that are durable and installed with precision and attention to detail will stand the test of time, and will also bode well for resale value, should you choose to sell your home in the future.

#2: Versatile living.
The pandemic re-shaped how we live and work, making flexible spaces are must-have. With many people still working from home or doing a combination of remote and in-office work, they need spaces that are flexible for both work and relaxation. If you are redesigning your living quarters, consider what can make it good as a flex-space. For example, could adding a French door to your home office provide quiet and a space separation between office and your other rooms?

#3: Bringing the outside in.
This trend is something that was popular, even before the pandemic hit. Plants, shrubbery, and other greenery is very popular in today’s homes. It not only brings a pop of color to the space, but it brings the beauty of nature in.

#4: Upgrading the outside.
Once the weather gets nice again in the spring and summer, there are lots of ways you can get outside to enjoy your space. Adding new siding this winter is one way to do that. New siding protects your home and gives it a great facelift. We proudly carry and install top quality fiber cement siding. This is a durable product that won’t swell, rot, or warp when it’s exposed to heat, humidity, or water. It uses ColorPlus® technology, which is uses a baked-on pre-finish that won’t fade or fade from ultraviolet rays.

Home Winterization Tips

The official start of winter is right around the corner and cold weather is already here. Now is the time to start winterizing your home, so you can be prepared for the drop in temperatures.

#1: Add insulation.
Having enough insulation in your home is a critical part of keeping your home warm during the winter. This is also one of the best ways to winterize the space. The right amount of insulation will additionally help you save money and energy. Add insulation to your attic floor, basement ceiling, walls, or any other areas where insulation is lacking or missing.

#2: Don’t ignore drafty windows or doors.
Drafts from old, inefficient doors and windows will waste energy. Caulking windows or doors can help in the short term to keep cold air from getting in, but this isn’t something that will help in the long run. It might be time to consider replacing your windows and doors instead. New Energy Star ® certified windows and doors are an investment that will not only keep you more comfortable for years to come, but they will save you money and add value to your home, too.

#3: Check the gutters.
Winter is wet and rainy in the Northwest. Make sure your gutters are cleaned out, so you don’t end up having standing water around the roof line. Clean gutters allow melting snow and rainfall to drain properly. Standing water that is left unattended could cause damage to your roof over time.

#4: Hire a trusted contractor.
Take the time to read online reviews of home improvement companies in the area. Ask them for pictures of jobs that they have recently completed and take note of any red flags that come up during your reading or discussions. Some home improvement projects need to be left only to the professionals. Whether it’s replacing your windows or doors, doing a complete roof replacement, or talking to us about new siding for your home, our experienced team at Lifetime Windows & Doors has the expertise you can trust. For over two decades, we have served the Pacific Northwest and have the reputation for quality workmanship to prove it.

Autumn Home Improvement Ideas

Autumn in the Northwest is one of the most beautiful times of year! Because the cooler months keep us indoors more often, now is a great time to ensure you have all of your home improvement projects done. Here are some ideas on what things you should tackle.

#1: Spruce up your front door.
Dramatically improve your curb appeal by painting your front door! Add a pop of color to the door or go with a classic look of white or black to freshen it up. The mild days of autumn are a perfect time to paint the door, then let it dry in the sun! If your door has seen better days and a coat of paint simply won’t cut it, a door replacement is probably in order. Our experts at Lifetime Windows and Doors can help you pick out the right door within your budget. Whether it’s a custom door, or something more basic, we have lots of styles to choose from.

#2: Make sure your windows and doors are sealed.
Water, bugs, and cold autumn drafts love to make their way into unsealed nooks and crannies. Make sure all of the sealing and caulking around your windows and doors is complete this autumn. Tightly sealed windows and doors will also help you save money on your utility bills. This is an easy home maintenance project and keeps you more comfortable this season!

#3: Check your roof.
Autumn weather gets breezy and rainy. Now is the time to make sure your roof is up to the challenge of keeping you dry and protected. Make sure your roof doesn’t have missing shingles or any other issues that could cause significant damage in the coming months. Perhaps your roof is more than 20 years old, and you’ve considered a replacement. We can help! Popular Patio Door Options

Summer and fall are beautiful in the Pacific Northwest and it’s the best time to sit outside and enjoy your yard space. If your patio needs an upgrade, don’t forget to include a great new patio door for your space. No matter what your specific style preference is, there’s a patio door to match it! Here are some of the most popular patio door options this year.

Vinyl patio doors:
These are usually the most common patio door options. They are affordable, durable, and are great for a variety of home styles. Sliding doors are a good option when space outside is limited. There are customizable options available too, just talk to our team about what we can do to find the right one!

Fiberglass patio doors:
Fiberglass patio doors are beautiful and built to last a long time. When the weather changes, they won’t expand or contract very much, which helps with energy efficiency. They are strong and resist rotting and are available in swinging or sliding styles.

Moving glass walls:
Moving glass walls are a stunning way to make a statement in your home – especially if you have a small area that you want to brighten up with natural light and views to the outside. We carry moving glass wall systems come in 3 to 6-panel configurations with pocket, stacking, and bi-fold doors. They’re crafted with aluminum on the structure and frame and are fully weather stripped to ensure no outside air gets in. They open and close seamlessly because of the tandem stainless steel ball bearing rollers. The moving glass wall option truly transforms spaces!

We love working with homeowners to upgrade their living space. We are happy to provide free quotes on any time of door replacement project, too! We proudly serve Portland, Oregon and the surrounding areas, as well as Central Oregon and Southwest Washington.  Visit our specials page to see what our current specials are, then contact us today for information on how to get your appointment scheduled.

How to Design a Luxury Home Addition

If you are considering adding on to your home or simply remodeling the space to make it updated or more aesthetically pleasing, you know how much planning will go into the project. You will need to consider some of your biggest priorities, while working with your budget and a contractor that you trust. Here are some tips on how to design a space that is not just luxurious, but comfortable and usable.

#1: Think long-term.
Investing in a home addition or remodel is a huge undertaking that can get expensive quickly. So, think long-term and how you can maximize your dollars for the greatest return. Adding new siding and a roof are some of the best things you can do when it comes to the long-term investment in your home. A quality roof will last for decades. Not to mention, fiber cement siding installed by the professionals at Lifetime Windows and Doors means your home has the protection it needs for years to come. It’s also important to plan for resale. If you end up wanting to relocate, think about what potential buyers will appreciate in your home and the updates you’ve made. Design a home that fits your preferences and lifestyle, but keep in mind that it should also still appeal to other buyers in the event you want to sell it.

#2: Think about your budget.
Whether you’re adding on a whole new room to your home or just updating various parts of the exterior, it is important to think through each aspect of your budget. Take your time to figure out what you are determining as a ‘must have’ and what is just ‘nice to have.’ Once you get near the end of your project, it’s better to be within your budget rather than way over it – as this can cause added stress.

#3: Choose the right company.
When you are planning for a large home addition or a project that includes updating your windows, doors or roofing, you will have some research to do. There are unfortunately a lot of companies out there that are dishonest or simply don’t pay attention to their quality of work. Make sure you read online reviews, ask for pictures of completed jobs, and make sure their expertise aligns with what you’re looking for. Our team at Lifetime Windows and Doors has decades of industry expertise in home renovation space. We have worked on thousands of residential and commercial projects throughout the Pacific Northwest and our positive reviews speak for themselves.

How to Know When It’s Time to Replace Windows

Your home or business are places that you spend a lot of time in. So, ensuring you have a comfortable space to live and work in is important. Windows play a big part in that. So, how do you know when it’s time to replace your windows? Here are some telltale signs that it’s time.

Draftiness:
If your windows are closed tightly, you shouldn’t feel a breeze coming through them. The only time you should feel a draft coming from your window, is if it’s open! If you are noticing that the windows around your home or office are drafty, chances are, you’re going to see a skyrocket in your energy bills. That’s because the heating and cooling system will need to work much harder than normal to regulate the temperature. If it’s doing that regularly, you’ll see the impact on your energy bill.

So, check around the window’s inner and outer edges to ensure that the seal or weatherstripping is intact. If it is, and you’re still feeling a draft, it might be time to replace your windows with new, energy efficient ones.

Mechanical Trouble:
Do you have windows that you have to wrestle with to open? Maybe they simply don’t open at all. Stubborn windows that won’t open or close all the way prevent you from enjoying the fresh air! Check to see if there is build-up in the tracks or rails of the windows. Perhaps you’re noticing defects or damage to the actual mechanical components of the window. If lubricating the rollers, springs, or hinges doesn’t fix the situation, chances are, you’ll need some professional assistance to get the window replaced.

Condensation:
Condensation on the windows usually happens then the air on one side of the window is cooler than the other side. This condensation is not only annoying, but that excess moisture could be a breeding ground for mold. Check to make sure the window seals are not broken, or that the window is installed correctly.

Window frame issues:
Does your window sag, warp, or have cracks in it? If you ignore issues like this with the window, you could open the area up for further damages, including moisture build up or dry rot. A full replacement is best in scenarios where there is significant damage.

Perhaps your windows need an aesthetic update because they are so old and out of date. If you own a historic property, for instance, the windows there may be very old and not energy efficient. We can help with that too! We make sure your window replacements match your style preferences in addition to the building’s character.

Now is the time to act on your window replacement project! We will work with your budget so you can find the perfect windows! Contact our team at Lifetime Windows and Doors today for a free estimate!
