For the last couple of weeks, the Pacific Northwest has seen record amounts of rain and horrible flooding has been the unfortunate result in many parts of Oregon. With more winter storms on the horizon, it’s important to remember that your gutters are a huge part of your home and when they don’t function properly, it can mean disaster. Clean gutters protect your home from water damage, which can translate to issues insulation, window leaking, regulating temperatures, and mold growth. Check your gutters on a regular basis. Here are some signs that it’s time to clean or that you need a gutter replacement.
Sign #1: Cracks, rust accumulation, or sagging.
Do your gutters look uneven or are they sagging? This could be a sign that your gutters need complete replacement. Sagging gutters won’t work efficiently and could leak. If you see noticeable cracks or the beginning of rust accumulating on your gutters, it’s time to consider replacing them. Rust and cracks can lead to leakage, which means costly repairs on other parts of your home later down the road.
Sign #2: Pooled water.
If you see a lot of pooled water that is collecting around the downspouts, you probably have a problem. This could cause extensive damage to the foundation if it isn’t taken care of quickly, so if there is pooled water anywhere, give us a call to have the gutter system checked out.
Sign #3: Clogs, clogs, clogs!
Rain and wind storms in Oregon can blow a lot of leaves, twigs, and other debris into your gutters. You can prevent clogs from happening by installing gutter guards and by regularly scooping out debris that falls into the gutter, but if you are noticing that there are consistent clogs, then there may be an issue with the actual gutter that’s causing the clog.
Sign #4: Hanging gutters.
This is pretty obvious, but if there are any gutters that are hanging or falling off the side of your home, it’s likely broken and needs repair or replacement. Make sure that your gutters are installed well so they don’t fall off during the next wind and rain storm.
Sign #5: Damage to the paint or wall.
Is the paint on the outside of your home rotting or beginning to peel, or have you noticed changes in the siding of your home? If you have leaking gutters, the water could be traveling down the walls, which will cause significant damage over time to the paint and siding.
